Teenagers Hurt In Pittsburg Shootout

PITTSBURG (CBS SF) - Two teenagers were shot in Pittsburg Thursday evening in what appeared to be an exchange of gunfire between two groups, a police spokesman said Friday.

Police were called to the 800 block of East Leland Road at about 5:50 p.m. to respond to a report of a person who had been shot, Pittsburg police Capt. Brian Addington said.

When officers arrived they found two victims, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, with gunshot wounds.

The two victims, both Pittsburg residents, were taken to hospitals and were expected to survive, Addington said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, but police do not believe it was fired during the shootout.

Investigators believe the two victims were involved in an ongoing dispute with another group of people and were walking on the sidewalk in front of a large apartment complex when a group of people in a gray or silver sedan pulled up alongside them and someone inside the car began firing, Addington said.

It appears that the victims or someone with them returned fire, Addington said.

Both victims had prior police contact and the 18-year-old had recently been released from juvenile hall after serving time for a carjacking, Addington said.

He described both victims as uncooperative.

So far investigators have not found any evidence indicating that the shooting was gang-related.
