SF Campaign Office Opens Without A Candidate

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – A new campaign office has opened in San Francisco's Mission District, but with a strange twist. There is actually no candidate for the office to campaign for.

The office on the 1500 block of Mission Street is the new headquarters for the Run Ed Run campaign, an ever growing effort to get San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee to run for mayor in November.

Eddy Zheng is the co-chair for the group and said they have volunteers, campaign signs and signature sheets at the ready.

"People believe in his capability and ability to stabilize a city," Zheng said.

The problem is that Lee has continually said he has no interest in the job and that he only took over for Gavin Newsom on an interim basis, until a new mayor was elected in November.

Lee was asked about it again during Pride festivities this weekend.

"Actually, to be quite candid, I haven't thought about it at all. I've been so busy with the work of the city," Lee said. "I will continue working the hardest I can."

Lee went on to say that he's not running for office, but avoided a question of whether he might run in the future.

Political pundits said that Lee can't afford to be coy because he's very popular right now and doesn't have to make a move for another month and a half.

Besides, making any kind of formal announcement could ruffle the feathers of those who have already thrown their hat into the ring.
