Santa Cruz rescue crews save four people who couldn't get back to shore

Cal Fire CZU said rescue crews in Santa Cruz County saved several people who could not get back to shore on Monday.

Around 2:17 p.m., first responders in Santa Cruz County were notified about several people in the ocean who were struggling to get back to shore at Davenport Landing.

Cal Fire said they took lead in the incident, and five rescue swimmers jumped into the ocean and rescued all four people.

No one was injured.

Cal Fire said three of the rescue swimmers were from Santa Cruz City Fire, and two of them were California State Parks Santa Cruz lifeguards.

Waters along the Pacific Coast were experiencing an increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents on Monday. The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard statement that went into effect at 11 a.m. Sunday and will be in effect until 11 p.m. Monday.

"Large swells are currently observed along the coast, and for your safety, do not get close to the water's edge," Cal Fire CZU said
