San Jose Police Arrest 2 Armed Robbery Suspects

SAN JOSE (BCN) -- Police have identified one of two men who were arrested on suspicion of robbing a San Jose convenience store at gunpoint, the San Jose Police Department announced Friday.

The robbery occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the 6 to Midnight convenience store, located at 5562 Monterey Road, San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said.

Garcia said surveillance footage shows a man walking into the business, brandishing a firearm, and demanding money from the attendant. He has been identified as Samuel Mendoza, a 20-year-old San Jose resident.

Mendoza left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash and got into a getaway car, Garcia said.

He said it does not appear that any shots were fired during the robbery and no injuries were reported.

Officers responded to the store and, while examining the surveillance footage, one officer recognized Mendoza as someone he had talked to at an apartment complex earlier this week, Garcia said.

Police requested that patrolling officers check the area near the complex, located at Crocker Court, near Edenview Drive.

When officers arrived about 1 p.m., they spotted Mendoza and another man outside of the building.

Officers arrested the other man, after determining that he had been driving the getaway vehicle.

He is an 18-year-old San Jose resident, but his name is being withheld pending further investigation, according to police.

Mendoza took off running into one of the units, Garcia said.

He said additional officers, a SWAT team and police dogs were called to assist in forming a perimeter around the complex.

Eventually, Mendoza surrendered to officers around 3:30 p.m., Garcia said.

Mendoza was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police said on Tuesday that Mendoza had also robbed the Bonfare Market at gunpoint, located at 1090 Leigh Ave, in which he made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. He did not use the gun or harm anyone, according to police.

Garcia could not say if any of the stolen cash or the firearm had been recovered.
