Progress on Redwood Shores Sewage Spill

Repair work continues in Redwood Shores following a sewage spill that sent at least 5,000 gallons of raw sewage into the lagoon and also into some residents' garages.

Sewage is no longer entering the lagoon, thanks to round the clock pumping by vacuum trucks since the 14-inch pipe burst at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Wildlife has not been affected, though beach goers are being urged to stay out of the water.

Long-time resident Linda Drummey noticed people swimming shortly after she got one of the automated phone calls with the warning.

"So I yelled to them to get out of the water and then I came back over here and advised the city to please put signs up so people are alerted."

Crews decontaminated the six garages around Davit Lane and Anchor Drive that were inundated with raw sewage.

The city's acting public works director, Marilyn Harang, said water testing will continue even after the pipe is replaced, meaning the beach will also be closed at least through Friday.

Harang said it's unclear what caused the pressurized pipe to burst. No one has lost water or sewage service because of the break.
