Dead bat found in Fremont tests positive for rabies; dog to be quarantined for 30 days

FREMONT – A dead bat found in a Fremont neighborhood earlier in the week has tested positive for rabies, authorities said.

The bat was found Tuesday at a home in the Niles neighborhood along De Salle Terrace.

Fremont police noted that Alameda County Vector Control responded and collected the bat so it could be tested. On Thursday, the Alameda County Department of Public Health confirmed that the bat tested positive for rabies.

Health officials said, while there was no known human or animal exposure to the rabid bat, a dog that lives at the residence will be revaccinated and quarantined for the next 30 days.

No other similar bats have been reported, police said, and the last case of rabies that was confirmed in Fremont was back in 2019.

Police said Alameda County Vector Control will be going door-to-door in the neighborhood to alert residents about the rabies incident.
