Ex-San Francisco Police Chief Alex Fagan Sr. Dies

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco police say former chief Alex Fagan, who was linked to the "Fajitagate" scandal in 2002, has died.

Fagan, who was appointed chief in 2003, died Monday in London.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Fagan collapsed after walking his dog while visiting his girlfriend. The newspaper says a Scotland Yard spokesman has confirmed Fagan's death.

Fagan just turned 60 on Nov. 2.

Fagan was assistant police chief in 2002 when a group of off-duty officers that included his son, Alex Fagan Jr., was accused of roughing up two men over a bag of steak fajitas.

The officers were later acquitted.

The incident was called "Fajitagate," after allegations surfaced that the elder Fagan conspired to cover up the beating.

Charges against Fagan Sr. and six others, including then-Chief Earl Sanders, were later dropped.

Fagan Sr. retired in 2004.
