Daily Madden: Brotherly Love Ends At Kickoff

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Super Bowl will feature two super competitive head coaches who happen to be brothers, Jim Harbaugh of the 49ers and John Harbaugh of the Ravens.

"People think this is a nice warm fuzzy story, two brothers, mother and father watching their two sons (coach) in the Super Bowl," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "But the biggest gap in sports is between winning and losing the Super Bowl, and the part that no one thinks about is that one of them is going to lose. This isn't your Thanksgiving family touch football game in the backyard. This is for (the Super Bowl), and the loss is a deep, deep scar... It's going to be a lot more difficult than it is nice."

Madden said John Harbaugh is just as competitive as his brother.

"They just didn't become competitive three weeks ago. That's who they are and what they are. They're really tough guys that coach tough teams," said Madden.

Madden noted that both coaches made difficult decisions mid-season that paid off. Jim Harbaugh changed his quarterback; John Harbaugh changed his offensive coordinator.

"They both made some gutsy moves, and they were willing to live with it and back it up. But had either one of those not been successful, I'd guarantee you, and you know this as well as I do, it would have backfired on them... What could have been a mutiny becomes the move of a genius." (8:05)
