Are You A Bay Area Local Or A Tourist? Map Of Where We Snap Photos Gives Us Away
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - If you've lived in San Francisco more than six months, the chances are you don't spend a lot of time snapping photos of the Sea Lions at Pier 39.
No, you're more likely to prop up your tripod across the water on Treasure Island or over on the U.C. Berkeley campus, according to a beautiful heat map of where in the Bay Area people have been taking photos.
Flickr user Eric Fischer overlayed a map of San Francisco with red markers indicating where tourists take photos and blue photos where locals post pictures.
The map is actually not new, Fischer created it some five years ago using a "somewhat arbitrary" algorithm to differentiate between tourists and locals based on mapped uploads. But it has shot up Reddit subgroups lately, with locals breaking it down like this:
"So tourists take pictures of pretty buildings and locals take pictures of pretty food?" said Reddit user APIglue.
Similar maps of a number of other big cities are available in Fischer's photo library.
