Women Stand For Equality At Capitol

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- On the eve of the electoral college casting their votes, many local groups are concerned with the incoming Donald Trump administration and what it will mean for minority groups.

Late Sunday afternoon, activists representing a wide group of interests held a rally called Women Stand Up For Equality.

Their message was one of inclusion and advocating for the rights of all people. They say unless all Americans are equal under the law, none of us are truly free.

Their concerns range from healthcare and reproductive rights to issues affecting working families, like workplace safety.

But more than that, they are encouraging people to not be complacent, regardless of the issues.

"We want people to rise up, and start talking about it. We want them talking about it at the kitchen table, have rallies, at their churches. We want people actually doing actions and talking about it," said Georgia Prescott, a Minister at the Center for Spiritual Awareness, who spoke at the event.

And there were many people in attendance heeding that call to action. Among them were two high school girls from Sacramento. They are concerned specifically with rights of the LGBT community and issues related to women's health.

" I don't believe that somebody in Washington DC can have control over my body. It doesn't make sense how I am not my own person," shared Emma Phoenix, a 15-year-old high school student.

The groups who took part in the rally believe that public pressure can go a long way towards creating change.
