Woman Shot In Front Of 4-Year-Old Son In South Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A woman walking with her small child was shot early Tuesday morning during a robbery in South Sacramento, according to officials.

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were called to 4211 Florin Road just after 9 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a shooting.

Deputies say the mother and child were walking near Florin Road and Lincolnshire Drive when the suspect tried to steal her purse.

"The female victim, 24 years old, was struggling with her purse. The suspect shot the victim once then fled in a silver vehicle," said Sacramento Sheriff's Department Sgt. Craig Norris.

One man saw it all go down.

"I heard a loud pop and next thing you know, he took off running down the street," the witness said.

It was a shocking crime that happened right before his eyes.

"She just started falling to the ground and said she got shot so we called an ambulance," he said. "We didn't want to see her die."

The witness, who didn't want to be identified, said he saw a man approach the young woman and her 4-year-old son as they were walking along Lincolnshire Road when suddenly a gunshot was fired.

"I ran over to see what was wrong and she said he shot her and took her purse," he said.

The woman was shot on her left shoulder.

Sheriff's deputies say the suspect took off in a silver Honda SUV. That's when another witness stepped in and stepped on it to help.

"The vehicle was last seen going north on Franklin," Norris said. "There was a witness that was following it, however they lost it on Franklin Road."

No license plate was taken, but for the man who saw it all unfold says it's an image he can't forget.

"It's a sad chain of events," he said. "People just don't have respect for human life anymore."

The woman is expected to recover. The boy was taken to stay with his grandmother.
