UPDATE: Identity Of Turlock Suspect Fatally Shot By Police Released

TURLOCK (CBS13/AP) — A suspect police say tried to carjack a pickup truck is dead after a chase on Highway 99 and an exchange of gunfire with officers.

The Modesto Bee reports that the trouble began around 6:30 a.m. Saturday when Turlock police officers spotted a stolen car parked at a motel.

The newspaper says when a man approached the car and saw officers, he brandished a gun and drove away.

After driving on, then off Highway 99, the suspect jumped out of the car he was driving and fired at a passing pickup truck, prompting officers to fire.

A Turlock police officer was wounded in the leg during the exchange of gunfire. He has been treated a hospital and released.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
