Second Oldest California Business Placerville Hardware Celebrates 160 Years

PLACERVILLE (CBS13) - This is one milestone you don't hear about often, especially in this economy.

At a time when some businesses don't make it, Placerville Hardware is still thriving after 160 years.

"Different items for different people in small towns," said Albert Fausel.

The hardware store has been in the Fausel family for 60 years and four generations. And right now, it is the second oldest business in California.

"The oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi," said David Fausel.

It was the gold rush that had people rushing out to their shop more than 150 years ago.

"Someone had to supply the supplies for the farmers and miners," said David.

Customers are still flocking for fantastic finds at the corner store.

"They have pretty much everything you would need here," said Albert.

From crocs to garden supplies and of course tools, even kitchen towels, there's something for everyone.

"Gold pans is unique and the mica for the fireplace, which you can't get everywhere," said Albert.

But workers say their success really may come down to customer service.

"Employees are usually on it; direct you to another location if we don't carry it," said Albert.

While they're celebrating a milestone, they're also looking ahead and hoping for another 160 years.

"I hope it keeps going," said David.

The Fausel family hopes to keep handing down the business to future generations.
