Winning name announced for Sacramento Zoo's new baby giraffe
SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento Zoo has announced the name picked for their new Masai giraffe.
On Friday, the zoo revealed that the baby giraffe – born on March 1 – has been named Sumi.
It's a name inspired by the favorite snack of Sumi's mother Amirah, the sumac browse.
Sumi was one of the three names people could vote on with a minimum $5 donation to the zoo. The other names in the running were Gumdrop and Monica.
Money raised from the name voting contest will help pay for a new shade structure at the zoo, officials say.
