SACRAMENTO COUNTY — Law enforcement officials Wednesday afternoon are attempting to recover a vehicle that is believed to have crashed into the Sacramento River on Tuesday.

California Highway Patrol's South Sacramento division said the search was happening in the water just north of the Walnut Grove area. CHP said it was providing traffic control while Elk Grove police are attempting to recover the vehicle.

River Road is closed between Twin Cities Road and the Paintersville Bridge.

It is not known if there is a driver in the vehicle.

CHP said its units and personnel from the Courtland Fire Department initially responded to the area around 2 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving a report of a vehicle going into the water. No signs of a crash were located.

Once daylight hit, investigators from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and did locate evidence of a possible crash into the water.

CHP said it is still investigating the nature of the call.
