Police: Suspect Who Attacked Driver At Apartment Smashed Between Cars
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Police say a Sacramento man was attacked right outside his home by a pedestrian who witnesses say had been vandalizing cars with a fire extinguisher.
According to police, the suspect was killed as he was squeezed between two cars early Wednesday morning.
The driver who was attacked is recovering but did not want to speak on camera. His neighbors say they're shaken up and are fearing for their safety at the gated apartment complex.
"It's pretty scary, and you question yourself if your neighborhood is safe?" said one neighbor who didn't want to show his face.
He and the driver had come back from the gym just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday when they noticed a suspicious looking man walking around their gated apartment complex with no shoes on, and saw him vandalizing cars with a fire extinguisher.
"He was spraying cars and we were afraid he was gonna take the fire extinguisher and start hitting cars with them so we called police as soon as this happened," he said.
Shortly after, his friend went to the market, and as he was coming home, the same man they had seen earlier attacked him from the driver's side window.
"The guy came in and attacked him, reached in the window, and was hitting him in the head," said neighbor Tracy Rodriguez.
The driver tried to get away by accelerating, but the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says the suspect had taken control of the car.
"The suspect reached into the car and grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to collide with another car in the complex, and during that contact was when the suspect was injured," said spokesman Tony Turnbull.
The suspect was pinned between the cars and died from his injuries.
The victim did suffer blows to his face, but no major injuries. He's taking time to process all this and is grateful to be alive.
