Murder Victim's Mother Reacts To Attack On News Crew
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- The mother of a man gunned down at a Natomas restaurant over the weekend said she was horrified that a news crew was attacked at a vigil for the victim.
Carol Jackson said she was sorry that her family members' emotions boiled over when a news crew approached them at the scene of the Natomas IHOP on Sunday afternoon, just over 12 hours after her son, 27-year-old Chester Jackson, died in the restaurant's parking lot.
An argument inside the restaurant led to a shooting just before 3:00 a.m., investigators said. No arrests have been made.
In a phone interview, Jackson said her family also deserves to receive an apology.
"First of all, I would like to apologize for the actions that were taken toward the media. I also would like the media to apologize for the disrespect of my son's memorial when they were asked to step away and let them have their private moment and they were told no," she said.
Carol said her family became furious when the KTXL-TV news crew told the mourners they had the right to videotape her family's vigil.
"I would like you to know that CBS13 did what they were asked to do and they did step away. Fox40 did not step away," she said. "They refused to step away and the actions were taken out of deep emotions from my son's passing."
Carol traveled from Oakland on Sunday after getting word her son had been killed and cried out to him for hours, until the coroner took his body away from the crime scene.
"I still wanted many more years with my baby," she said.
Carol said she is planning the funeral in Oakland, and is relying on her faith to carry her through her grief.
"The Lord will be here to keep me strong to survive this. That's who's going to be here for me," she said.
Police have not yet made any arrests in the assault on the news crew.
