Man Crashes SUV In Midtown With Police In Pursuit

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A man wanted in a hit-and-run accident sped off from police and hit two homes in midtown Sacramento on Monday afternoon before crashing and fleeing on foot.

Sacramento police detained someone in the area but then released him, so the suspect was still at large. Neighbors reported seeing him running through backyards and even offering people money to help hide him.

"A gentleman popped out from the house and started running at us. He looked at my boyfriend and had a wad of cash and said 'Will you please help me?'" said Baily Kidd, who lives in apartment complex nearby. "And he said no, get out of my backyard, and he hopped back over the fence."

The driver reportedly struck a parked car, and shortly afterward Sacramento police started following the suspect and he drove off at speeds up to 60 mph in the downtown and midtown areas. At some point the suspect lost police but crashed his car at 27th and F between two homes.

"It just sounded like a big crash," said Mary Weddle, one of the residents whose home was hit. "I didn't realize he hit my house."

The black SUV damaged two homes. The brick porch was struck in one and the other had some woodwork damaged in the front. Fire and PG&E crews were on seen to check out a possible gas leak.
