Lolz, Twerking And Obvs Among Thousands Of New Words Added To Scrabble Dictionary

SACRAMENTO (CBS Sacremento)-- Scrabble is updating its list of acceptable words for the first time since 2011, including many internet slang terms.

BBC reports about 6,500 words have been added to the Collins Scrabble Word List.

The new additions include twerking, emoji, bezzy, ridic, onesie, devo, vape, shootie, and many more.

"Dictionaries have always included formal and informal English, but it used to be hard to find printed evidence of the use of slang words," says Helen Newstead, head of language content at Collins, as reported by BBC.

A number of technology-related terms have also been added to the list including facetime, hashtag, and sexting, in addition to shorthand exclamations such as augh, blech, eew, grr, waah and yeesh.

"Now people use slang in social media posts, tweets, blogs, comments, text messages - you name it - so there's a host of evidence for informal varieties of English that simply didn't exist before," Newstead says of the new list.
