Fairfield Cameras Spot Gun-Toting Teen

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (CBS13) -- Security cameras in downtown Fairfield gave police an edge on apprehending a teen boy who was allegedly carrying a handgun, according to authorities.

The Fairfield Police Department said dispatchers have access to 29 surveillance cameras, which prove critical in providing information to officers, especially after recent budget cuts.

"It's incredibly helpful, a lot of times, you know, there is a time delay getting the information to the officer," said Sgt. Rob Lenke.

Dispatchers received a call reporting suspicious activity near Jefferson Street and Texas Street at about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, and when they looked at the camera, they saw signs of alleged drug activity.

While officers responded to the scene, authorities were able to read the vehicle license plate and keep tabs on the suspects.

When authorities arrived, they found a .38 caliber hand gun inside the coat pocket of a 16-year-old suspect. A small amount of drugs was also recovered.

The suspect was booked into juvenile hall on charges of illegal weapon possession.

The Fairfield Police Department hopes to increase the number of cameras throughout Fairfield to 70 this year.
