Elk Grove leaders settle on new name for zoo once it moves from Sacramento
ELK GROVE – Calling it the start of a new chapter, Elk Grove leaders have settled on a new name for the Sacramento Zoo once it moves to the city.
Wednesday night, the Elk Grove city council voted in favor of renaming the zoo the "Elk Grove-Sacramento Zoo" once it relocates.
Last month, the council proposed naming the space the "Greater Sacramento Zoo at Elk Grove." Input from the public and zoo officials prompted city leaders to compromise, and shorten, the proposed name.
The zoo has outgrown its current 15-acre spot at William Land Park, officials have argued.
The new location in the works for the zoo will fill around 65 acres of vacant farmland near the intersection of Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway in south Elk Grove.
Construction of the new zoo is expected to begin in 2027.
