City Giving Food Vendor Test Run In Park

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- City officials are allowing an unusual addition to one of Sacramento's most scenic public parks in hopes of improving the city's bottom line.

For the first time in East Sacramento's 100 year history, the city is renting space at McKinley Park to a food vendor.

The testing ground allows Gyro 2 Go to set up shop on the grounds for $200 a month as part of their park vendor pilot program.

Loyal customers are already making the cart part of their daily routine.

"Don't tell my wife, but close to 50 to 60 [dollars per week]," admitted Waheed Akhtar.

The Parks Department has been considering adding vendors for at least a year to help generate more income, and the city is already in negotiations to add another food cart to the park.

There is no immediate word on plans to further expand the program.
