California Woman, 23, Escapes Police Station After Arrest

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) -- Ventura police are searching for a 23-year-old woman who escaped custody several hours after being arrested.

Officials say Kelly Smith of Ventura was sitting in the booking area of the Ventura police station when she slipped off her handcuffs and ran away Tuesday night. It took a few minutes for officers to notice she was gone and a search of the area came up empty.

Police say Smith was arrested after leading officers on a vehicle chase that ended when the stolen car she was driving went over a median, hit a parked car and slammed into a power pole.

Officers found ammunition, explosives, drugs, drug paraphernalia and forged checks in the car.

The Ventura County Star says a male passenger of the car was also arrested.
