Restructuring Slashes 19 Jobs At Appeal-Democrat Newspaper

MARYSVILLE (CBS13) — Nearly 20 people are out of work after a restructuring at the Appeal-Democrat.

The newspaper's publisher released a statement on Tuesday saying 19 positions were eliminated at the newspaper in the restructuring. Two newspapers under the company's Tri-County newspaper brand, The Willows Journal and the Orland Press-Register have been merged into the Glenn County Journal.

The newspaper was a longtime member of  Freedom Communications, but was sold on June 1 to a privately owned publishing company called Vista California News Media, a subsidiary of Horizon Publications.

Freedom underwent Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September of 2009, but left it in April of 2010. It was acquired by 2100 Trust in 2012.

The newspaper's publisher said in a statement the cuts were spread across all departments in the organization.

In 2011, the Appeal-Democrat was recognized by Editor & Publisher as one of the 10 Newspapers That Do It Right for its multimedia efforts and community outreach.
