1 in custody after "threats" prompt evacuation at the University of Pittsburgh, officials say

The University of Pittsburgh said a person is in custody after "threats" were made toward a department inside Wesley W. Posvar Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The university's Emergency Notification Service said in a campus-wide alert around 4:30 p.m. that the individual was taken into custody "for further investigation." It was not immediately clear what kind of threats were made or which department was targeted.

According to an alert that went out at 3:57 p.m., the University of Pittsburgh Police Department was investigating "threats" made toward a department inside Posvar Hall. The building at South Bouquet and Roberto Clemente Drive was then evacuated and closed.

There is a large police presence outside Posvar Hall that is impacting traffic, and people are asked to avoid the area.

The building houses the College of General Studies, the Office of Veterans Services, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, the University Center for International Studies, plus the social sciences departments of the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, according to Pitt's website. It is the largest academic-use-only building on campus and sits on the former site of Forbes Field.

The university said more information about reclaiming any personal property left in the building will be released later.
