16-Year-Old Driver Dies After Head-On Collision In Somerset Co.

SOMERSET COUNTY (KDKA) -- A 16-year-old driver died Sunday from injuries sustained in a head-on collision that happened in Summit Township on Friday.

The crash happened on the Mason Dixon Highway north of Brant Road just before 4:30 p.m. Friday.

According to state police, the 16-year-old driver was traveling north on the Mason Dixon Highway and going around a left-hand curve in the road as a 35-year-old driver was traveling south and going around a right-hand curve in the road. The 16-year-old driver failed to stay in his lane and drove into the southbound lane, crashing head-on into the other vehicle.

State police say the 16-year-old driver, of Hyndman, Pa., died from injuries sustained in the crash at a hospital in Balitmore, Md. His identity has not yet been released.

A 17-year-old boy, of Meyersdale, Pa., was in the car with the 16-year-old driver. He sustained a suspected serious injury in the crash. There is no word on his current condition.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained a suspected minor injury.
