McKees Rocks Police Chase Ends In Arrest

STOWE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A man was arrested in McKees Rocks Sunday after leading police on a car chase.

According to court papers, when a Mckees  Rocks officer tried to stop a car traveling on Island avenue without headlights on around 2:30 p.m.  The driver, 23-year-old Devaughn Echols, continued at a high rate of speed, even going the wrong way on one-way streets. Echols eventually crashed into a parked car, which hit two more cars, including a Stowe Township Police cruiser.

His car was also missing a brake light.

"We saw the cop cars chasing them, and when this car came down the alley, the cop car was already sitting there, and it just ran right into him," witness Rebecca Wendt said. "They passed by once, and the second time they passed by, we thought something was up because they were chasing somebody, and that's when we heard the crash."

Echols crashed into multiple parked cars on Woodward Avenue, then tried to escape on foot.  Police say Echols jumped onto the hood of the police car. The officer pulled out his Taser and gave chase. The officer was able to hit the suspect with the Taser and Echols fell to the ground.

The passenger in Echols' vehicle, Terrance Murphy, also ran from the scene. Officers were able to chase him down and take him to the ground. They found a small amount of marijuana on him.

And officers found a woman in the passenger seat of the crashed car on Woodward Avenue. She had a gun in her lap. Officers realized she was unconscious from the crash and were able to safely remove the gun. The woman, 22-year-old Naterra Freeman, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

Echols was taken to Ohio Valley Hospital, checked out and then taken to the Allegheny County Jail. He faces a long list of charges including reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence and carrying a firearm illegally.

Echols has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 12.
