Storm Has Passed, But Winter Woes Not Behind Us

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The brunt of the storm has moved well to our east, packing a punch along the New England coastline and leaving behind plenty of snow in Pittsburgh.

With temperatures heading south of where rock salt is effective, people have been heading to the big home improvement stores looking for something that works in single digits.

While you might find some dwindling magnesium chloride supplies, calcium chloride got cleaned out in the last storm – leaving places like ACE Hardware in Greentree and Evey True Value in Bethel Park answering the demand for its melting and concrete protection qualities.

"I don't want to disturb my steps," said Herbert Summer of Greentree. "I understand it protects my steps."

"Calcium Chloride, which we have a huge stock of, works near zero temperature," said Vernon Wheeler of Greentree.

And there are plenty of customers looking for blends of rock salt, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride.

They work below freezing, but you have to get to the asphalt or concrete first.
But Lori Hoag wanted a little insurance for her sidewalks.

"I'm just concerned about it getting frozen over," said Hoag.

Steve Krugle went looking for a winter blend – ahead of the temperature drop.

"It doesn't harm the driveway, that's what I look for," said Krugle. "I don't like rock salt, I like the winter melt."

No matter what you are spreading or shoveling, this weather can cause some serious medical issues, like strains, asthma attacks and even heart attacks.

"Take your time and pace yourself and that can prevent a lot of injury and illness," said John Rittenberger with UPMC Presbyterian Emergency.
