Steelers TE Spaeth Out Until Mid-Season With Foot Injury

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- Gerry Dulac of the Post-Gazette reports Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth has a Lisfranc injury in his foot and will miss eight to ten weeks.

In medical vernacular, the Lisfranc injury is one in which one or all of the metatarsal bones in the foot are displaced from the tarsus. It is more commonly called a "midfoot injury."

As the Steelers prepare to open the preseason Saturday against the visiting New York Giants at 7:30 on KDKA-TV, the only healthy tight ends on their training camp roster are David Paulson, Jamie McCoy, and Nathan Overbay (nephew of former Pittsburgh Pirate Lyle Overbay). Starter Heath Miller is still on the mend from ACL surgery, and David Johnson is recovering from a knee surgery of his own.

Paulson had seven catches for 51 yards as a rookie out of Oregon in 2012. McCoy, a Texas A&M product, also tried out for the Steelers in 2011, as well as the Rams and Chargers. Overbay is an undrafted free agent from Eastern Washington who signed on Thursday.

Spaeth, a 2007 third-round draftee, originally played four seasons with the Steelers, catching 36 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns in that span, before signing with Chicago as a free agent.

The Steelers reacquired him back in March as a stopgap until Miller's return.
