NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – A significant police presence was present on the North Side Friday morning.
According to state police, three search warrants were executed at three different homes in the 200 block of Essen Street as joint investigation with the DEA.
A total of 75 to 100 officers from State Police, seven local police departments and Drug Enforcement Agency agents searched homes at 212, 218 and 221 Essen Street Friday morning.
One of the homes has a daycare.
State police say they seized a large amount of heroin, items related to making and selling heroin and two laptops.
"When you have a joint investigation of this magnitude, there's a lot that's involved," said State Police public information officer, Trooper Robin Mungo. "We're not talking about somebody standing on the corner selling small amounts, we're talking significant numbers."
State police say the investigation has been going on for several months and the people who live in the three homes are related.
"I've seen a lot of traffic, the Army, police cars, dogs, you name it and then it's blocked off with tape and everything," said Bernadette Wilson as she stood on her front porch on Essen St. Wilson has lived on the street for 46 years. She told KDKA she had no idea this was happening in her neighborhood.
"It's just too much for something like that and then if it's a daycare, there should be nothing like that going on around here, there's kids involved and everything," said Wilson.
State police say the heroin was in bags stamped with various names: NWA, COTTON CANDY, SPY, INDISPUTED, AVENGER, CALL OF DUTY, EMERALD and OKC. Police are asking people who suspect drug activity to reach out to them.
"Don't be afraid to contact law enforcement," said Trooper Mungo. "You get the ball rolling and we'll take that ball and we'll roll with it. We'll collect evidence we need in order to bring these people to justice."
No arrests were made while those warrants were being executed. State police say they will process the information that was seized.
