PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man is in critical condition after being shot while in the passenger seat of a car traveling through the city Tuesday evening.

A bullet hole was visible on the passenger side windshield of the white Nissan Altima when police found it in the South Side Flats.

Police say the male victim had been shot in the head. He is in critical condition at a local hospital. The driver was not hurt.

Police say the shooting happened just before 6 p.m. as the car was traveling on Brady Street and Second Avenue in South Oakland.

"It's undetermined at this time where those shots came from," said Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Alicia George.

Police said after the car was hit, the driver drove across the Hot Metal Bridge and ended up on South Water Street in the South Side Works right next to American Eagle Outfitters headquarters and the Hyatt House Hotel.

Heather Steiner, who's in town from Philadelphia and staying at the hotel, saw the road roped off.

"We saw the police cars outside of our hotel and couldn't believe it. We had no idea what was going on," said Steiner. "This is the last thing we'd expect, but we are just going to turn in for the night and stay in."

Part of Second Avenue was closed to traffic for some time. They were combing the area for clues.

"We are still gathering evidence and trying to determine exactly what happened between Second Avenue and here," said George. "At this time, we are still trying to piece together where this shooting occurred."

Police are actively looking for a suspect or suspects. They don't know a motive at this time.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Pittsburgh Police Violent Crime Unit at 412-323-7800.
