2 Injured After Truck Goes Over Hillside In Shaler

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Two people were taken to the hospital after a vehicle accident early Sunday morning in Shaler.

Dispatchers say it happened just after 2:00 a.m. in the 300 block of Mt. Royal Boulevard.

According to Shaler Township Police, a vehicle went over the hill.

Both lanes were shut down while crews investigated the incident. Allegheny County Police were also on the scene.

Mike Schmitt lives nearby and heard the crash as it happened.

"A few minutes after that I saw bright red emergency lights from the rear windows of my house," he said as he looked at the aftermath of the scene. "Coming from this direction, that's always when you hear it on this road."

Police say one of the victims was in critical condition and the other was seriously injured. Both are now in stable condition.

"It took them quite a while to extricate them from the vehicle. They had to cut the roof off with the jaws of life and get the up the hill here on a sliding gurney," Schmitt said.

He told KDKA it's not the first time someone has crashed near that sharp bend as the road goes down into Etna.

Mt. Royal Boulevard is no longer closed between Kenneth Drive and Beyrleye Avenue. It was closed for more than seven hours as crews had to get the truck back up the hillside. They had to cut into the guard rail to get it on the road.

Schmitt would like to see the turn be addressed before someone else gets hurt.

"The road has guard rail up until this point, but the section they went through doesn't have guard rail or retaining barrier. I think that might be something they could look into installing. It would help stuff like this," he said while looking at the sharp bend.

There has been no word on any cause or charges.
