Save Money On Your Teens Car Insurance
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - The cost of just about everything seems to be on the rise. If you are bringing a teen on to your car insurance policy you may be left in shock when you see how high your rates rise but there are ways to reduce the cost.
Jennifer Johnsen-Nazareth, owner of Johnsen Insurance and Financial Service Inc. joined the KDKA Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway to share some tips on how you can save money.
First she says there is something called "Good Student Discount" which if "a student has above a 3.0 [grade point average] or higher. It requires that they summit grades on a regular basis but the 200 dollars roughly a year it could save might be worth it," says Johnsen-Nazareth.
Johnsen-Nazareth, who works with State Farm, says that there is also a "Steer Clear" program. It is a tracking program that requires the individual to fill out a log on a regular basis. She recommends, "they do that while on a permit so the day they get their license they've already competed a 'Steer Clear' program that enables them to get that discount."
"If a student completes six hours behind the wheel and
they complete 30 hours [in a] classroom they may be eligible to have a discount for driver training.
Johnsen-Nazareth cautions parents to make sure they don't "buy their 16 year old a brand new car and entitle that car in the child's name. When they do that, the child cannot access the multiline discount that the parents may be receiving," explains Johnsen-Nazareth.
If your child is going to college and they are on average 100 miles away they can possibly be put on something called a "student away discount or policy provision." Johnsen-Nazareth says "that really helps reduce costs."
