Runners Take To Streets For Pittsburgh Marathon

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Runners in the  Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon didn't let a little rain dampen their spirits.

The race began at 7 a.m. at Sixth Street and Liberty Avenue with 22,000 expected participants.

It didn't take long for a group of about eight runners to break away from the pack and set the pace for the race.

According to the Pittsburgh Marathon's website, the men's winner was Jeffrey Eggleston with a time of 2:16:40.

The rest of the top five were:

  • David Rutoh – 2:17:08
  • Tariku Bokain – 2:17:41
  • Isaac Birir 2:17:52
  • Teklu Tefera Deneko 2:18:31

The women's marathon winner was Yihunlish Bekele Delelecha with a time of 2:35:36.

The rest of the top five were:

  • Serkalem Abrha 2:39:12
  • Tezeta Dengersa 2:40:04
  • Alice Ndirangu 2:41:29
  • Natasha Labeaud 2:42:50

The course took the runners through several neighborhoods including the South Side, West End and Oakland before finishing up on the North Shore near Heinz Field.

According to the marathon's medical team, 253 runners were treated, 99 along the course and 154 at the finish. Officials say 21 of those people were taken to local hospitals.

The medical team says some of the issues treated were weather-related, including hyperthermia and hypothermia, as well as dehydration and some complaints of shortness of breath and chest pain.
