Ray Shero Named NHL GM Of The Year
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Despite the collapse of his team in the Eastern Conference Finals, the acquisitions made by Pens General Manager Ray Shero won him the league's GM of the Year award.
With the offseason addition of Tomas Vokoun, the trading of Jordan Staal and the trade deadline acquisitions of Brendan Morrow, Douglas Murray, Jarome Iginla and Jussi Jokinen, most looked at Ray Shero as the clear cut choice to come away with the hardware, and tonight he did just that as the league announced a number of their season awards.
While the trade for Tomas Vokoun made the largest impact of any move made this year, it was Shero's activity at the trade deadline that most likely separated him from the rest of the pack.
Although his moves for Morrow and Murray made headlines all across the league, they were greatly overshadowed by the acquisition of Iginla, which looked all but impossible as it appeared the Boston Bruins had secured the former Calgary Flames' captain.
Shero beat out two other candidates for the award, Marc Bergevin of the Montreal Canadiens and Bob Murray of the Anaheim Ducks.
