Rabid Bats Found In Cranberry Township Home
CRANBERRY (KDKA) -- A rabies alert has been issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture after bats were found inside a home in Cranberry, Butler County.
According to the alert, the bats which later tested positive for rabies, got in through a fireplace, and two people were exposed.
Those people are now receiving treatment to ward off rabies.
Dr. Ron Voorhees, Acting Director at the Allegheny County Health Department, says anyone who finds a bat in their home should report the incident to the department.
Last month, a family in Richland Township found a bat in their home that subsequently tested positive for rabies.
As a precaution, that family was also treated with an anti-rabies vaccine, according to the health department.
Experts say a bite from a bat is so tiny it may leave no visible marks and so painless that someone sleeping might not even feel it.
