Police: Man Smoking Heroin In Car Tried To Run Over Officer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police say someone tried to run over a Port Authority Police Officer at the Chartiers Park and Ride.

In a briefing, police tell KDKA a Port Authority officer saw the suspect trying to use heroin.

They say that's when the man, reportedly in his 20s and from Troy Hill, pinned the officer against another car, then took off. The officer was not seriously injured.

"He was attempting to take him into custody," said Port Authority Police Lt. Shawn Hudzinski. "He was trying to get a handcuff on him and it was at that point that the individual put the car in reverse and proceeded to go backwards."

The officer fired two shots at the man's car as he took off, heading for the West End, then eventually on Carson Street.

He was arrested just a few miles from where the incident started.

The man is charged with assault and other charges. Police say they also found a .9 mm gun in his car.

He's currently in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting arraignment.
