Two People Injured In Hill District Shooting 01:14

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A 19-year-old injured in a double shooting in Pittsburgh's Hill District Sunday night has died.

According to Pittsburgh Police, officers were called out to the 2400 block of Bedford Avenue just after 10 p.m. for multiple Shotspotter alerts and 911 calls.

Officers arrived at the scene and were led to an apartment where a man had been shot in the chest. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died early Monday morning. The medical examiner identified him as 19-year-old Kane Hines.

Police said they learned another person arrived at a nearby hospital after being shot along Bedford Avenue.

"I am terribly concerned about people in my community. Every time someone gets shot, this is one of our own," said Paul Abernathy, CEO of the Neighborhood Resilience Project.

Pittsburgh police have been investigating numerous shootings that have happened in the area. Over the last few weeks, several people have been shot near or in the complex. On March 22, 45-year-old Tiwand Hill was killed in an apartment in the same complex.

The home of the Neighborhood Resilience Project is just a few blocks away on Bedford Avenue. Abernathy told KDKA they help communities rise out of trauma, especially trauma from violence.

"Every time I hear of people becoming victims of gun violence, to me what comes to my mind, is the immense sorrow and pain that exists in our community, and it has existed for many generations and how we must do more to help heal this pain and disrupt this violence," Abernathy said.

He said he hopes to grow their trauma response team, which responds to homicides in Allegheny County. Abernathy said it's going to take a public health approach to help communities in crisis.

"We have to recognize and have to realize the importance of committing to a public health approach to developing our communities to build that resilience to help foster opportunities for healing so we can disrupt the transmission of this disease," he said.

Police said witnesses told officers they saw a group of men take off from the scene of the shooting Sunday night. No word on any suspects.

"We do look for justice to happen, but we do know in this event in and of itself, even if this man survives, even if the shooter is arrested, there is still so much more to do, and we must never lose sight of that," he said.
