OCEAN GROVE, N.J. (AP/KDKA) - A Pennsylvania man has drowned while swimming at the New Jersey shore.
Authorities say 42-year-old Gabriel D'Abruzzo, of Pittsburgh, began struggling shortly after he entered the ocean waters off Ocean Grove around 9:40 p.m. Monday.
He was soon pulled from the waters by bystanders who performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.
Emergency responders initially were told a second struggling swimmer was still in the water. They then searched for about 45 minutes before determining D'Abruzzo was the lone victim.
D'Abruzzo was a well-known musician locally. He worked with the Moon Area School District for years. They released this statement:
"Gabe D'Abruzzo was an accompanist for Moon Area High School choirs for over a decade. He was an important member of the music department, lending his musical genius to every performance, which both highlighted and elevated our students' abilities. He was not only a gifted pianist and educator, but also a genuine and caring person. Moon Area School District extends our deepest sympathies to Mr. D'Abruzzo's family during this difficult time."
