Pens Analyst Jay Caufield Says Expect To See The Caps' Best

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)-Root Sports Penguins analyst Jay Caufield joined "The Cook and Poni Show" on Monday morning to preview a very big week for the Penguins, which begins tonight with a back-to-back series with Washington.

He agrees with the guys that this is going to be a great couple of games with the Caps, who are a desperate team right now.

"Washington is a hard team to figure out right now," Caufield said. "They are trying to do whatever they can to scratch out points. I would expect the best from them tonight."

Caufield agrees that this could be the best week of the Pens' regular season with back-to-back games with the Philadelphia Flyers coming up Friday and Saturday following the games with the Caps.

The Pens will wrap up a five-game road trip tonight.

Caufield tells the guys it was important for the Pens to find a way to win in Anaheim after suffering a tough loss to San Jose.

"They needed that win for the psyche moving forward." Caufield said. "They may have to see both of these teams from the west later."

Caufield tells the guys that the Western Conference seems to be much stronger than the east, but admits nobody wants to face the Bruins or Pens right now.

The moves at the deadline were great picks according to Caufield, but there is still question marks up front for this team.

"There are just not guys out there that you can pick up to play next to Sid," Caufield said. "There are still question marks as to what [Lee] Stempniak's role will be."

Caufield said he likes the way Marcel Goc has played since arriving and he will only get better with a couple days to practice with the guys.

Jay admits he thinks the Pens did the right thing by not trading for Ryan Kesler.

"It might have sounded great, but not to give up Sutter or Despres," Caufield said.

Caufield says he likes Despres and thinks he played well in his last call, but they just need to let him play. He brings much needed help with Kris Letang being out.
