WEST BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A woman was killed in a house fire in West Bethlehem Township on Thursday.
The fire broke out at a home in the 1200-block of Barr Run Road just before 6 p.m.
According to authorities, the structure was fully engulfed upon arrival. The flames were coming from the second floor of the house and firefighters say they continued to flare up for hours.
Officials say a passing driver first noticed the flames coming from the home and told a neighbor to call 911.
Firefighters say the victim, 55-year-old Cynthia Ann Scott, was found dead in the kitchen area.
"First, I tried to call her to get her out of the house. The back of the house was burning; you could see the flames going up in the air," said Mabel Vought, the victim's neighbor.
Vought says Scott had lived across the road from her for nearly 20 years and the two had become close, like mother and daughter.
"It was Tuesday when she came over here and ate and helped me take down my Christmas tree. She would help me and I would help her," Vought said.
Multiple fire companies were called in to help fight the blaze. One firefighter suffered a knee injury.
The home was gutted.
