Officer Involved In South Side Fight Placed On Desk Duty

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A police officer seen on cell phone video kicking and kneeing a man pinned to the ground on the South Side has been placed on desk duty.

It was announced Friday:

Pittsburgh Police Officer Raymond Toomey has been assigned to the warrant office pending the outcome of investigations into an arrest he made on the South Side.

The temporary assignment will keep Toomey off the streets until investigations are concluded.

"I got a problem with this," Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said. "I understand that on occasion an officer needs to use blows to induce pain so someone complies with a lawful arrest."

Toomey was arresting Nathan Stanley, who he said claimed to have a gun. Toomey said he feared Stanley was reaching for his waistband, but video of the incident does not appear to support that.

Zappala is going to have an expert review the video.

"I got a problem with kicking someone in the head. So we're in the process. We've gotta find an expert, outside of the city," he said.
