Off-Duty Officer Shot Multiple Times In Homewood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh Police Officer was taken to the hospital for multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting early Sunday morning in Homewood.

According to Pittsburgh Police, Officer Calvin Hall, 36, was shot on 7300 block of Monticello Street around 1:30 a.m., he was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

Hall has been with Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for two years and was assigned to the Northview Heights Public Safety Center because of his dedication to community outreach.

"He was born and raised in the City of Pittsburgh and his ways of connecting to the community and to other officers was extremely beneficial for what we're trying to do in Northview Heights," Sergeant Lewis said. "He is always positive, always upbeat. I approached him and said, 'I want you up here because of your personality and the way you interact with the community.' He's always smiling, always positive."

Darnell Coates said he witnessed the whole thing.

"I heard four gunshots. Pop, pop, pop, pop and he hit the ground," he said.

"He was coming over to visit me," said Coates.

He said Hall is his cousin. Coates said there was a pre-wedding party happening at the home across the street from his on Monticello. He said a fight broke out and someone threatened him with a gun.

"Once I told him that somebody was waving a gun at me, he came back. But I didn't know he was coming back," said Coates. "I'm trying to break it all up and once everybody started dispersing, cause I thought it was over with."

That's when Coates said the shots went off. Police sources told KDKA the off-duty officer lives in Homewood and got into an argument with two women, then was shot three times. Coates said his cousin was in the middle of the street when police tried to treat him. Then, Coates said he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian.

"His sister came in from Virginia because of this. And his nieces are here," said Coates.

Several people were detained on the scene for questioning.

A party was reportedly going on at the time of the shooting.

A man who lives across the street and says he's the police officer's cousin told KDKA the party was a pre-wedding celebration that went south. He says a fight broke out at the party, and then shots were fired.

SWAT was called in to search inside the house.

There are no arrests at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
