Oakland Development Project To Lead To Fifth Avenue Traffic Restrictions For 2 Years

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- As the commute for a new workweek started, so did new 2-year traffic restrictions. Signs and some barriers went up just after 8 Monday morning along Fifth Avenue in Oakland.

According to construction crews, the restrictions are a part of the Innovation Research Tower construction project at the corner of FIfth Avenue and Halket Street.

Fifth Avenue will go from three lanes to two from Chesterfield Road to Robinson Street. The contraflow bus lane will be moved over one lane.

"We just said, 'if we can be steadfast, then there is a reward on the other side.' So it is a growing pain, but we're willing to have that temporary discomfort with the long-term professionals," Salud Juicery owner Sheronica Marshall said.

Salud Juicery is right across the street from the construction. Halket Street outside her shop will no longer be two way but just one way from Euler Way to Fifth Avenue. Vehicles will not be able to make the left off Fifth to get onto Halket, but it shouldn't cost Marshall many customers.

"Street parking can sometimes be limited so most people walk," Marshall Sid outside her Oakland store.

Construction crews say the relocated bus stop near Halket and Fifth will stay in service. More barriers and line painting for the traffic restriction will be done later this week. The 10-story building is expected to be done in the summer of 2022.
