Authorities say two young men walking through a vacant lot and adjacent hillside spotted something unusual over a steep, wooded cliff. They called 911 and Pittsburgh Police responded to the scene, and later confirmed the discovery of human remains.
"Obviously, we do not know the circumstances, nor do we know how the bones got there or who they belong to," said Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Alicia George. "This was a badly decomposed body, basically just bones."
Forensics teams and crime scene investigators spent hours at the site. Retrieving the body was a challenge for first reponders, and special equipment had to be brought in to complete the task.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office is now working to try to identify the person. Investigators are also scouring missing persons reports.
