Meeting Over Hanover Twp. Frackwater Plant Gets Heated
HANOVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- People fighting a proposed frackwater treatment plant sounded off Thursday night.
While natural gas drilling is bringing money to our region, some people in Hanover Township, Washington County, say they're scared and angry about their proposed new neighbor.
"You're talking about my health here," said Pam Chappell, who has a sign in her front yard opposing the plant. "You're talking about everybody's health in this township."
She was one of about 100 people who showed up for a hearing before township supervisors.
Some of her anger was directed at representative of the company which wants to build the plant: Hydro Recovery.
"Don't sit there with a smirk on your face because I don't think it's funny at all," she yelled across the room.
The plant would bring in about 150 trucks a day with frack or flowback water to be treated and recycled.
However, Hydro Recovery maintains that the plant will not cause noise, odor or impact the watershed.
"No, I do not believe their safety is in jeopardy," said David Hedrick, from Hydro Recovery. "Yes, there is a concern with increased truck traffic, but it is a state highway so it's used to heavy truck traffic."
Some wonder why the plant can't be located in a nearby industrial park.
The proposed site outside the park is also zoned industrial, and the company says it has a sales agreement.
No action was taken by township supervisors at Thursday's meeting.
