MCKEESPORT (KDKA) – Nine people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire in McKeesport early Friday morning.
According to officials at the scene, the fire started in the 700 block of Ridge Street around 6:30 a.m.
A resident told firefighters they noticed fire in the walls.
"They said a fire in the wall, they thought it was electrical," McKeesport Fire Dep. Chief Don Sabol said.
What firefighters thought would be a pretty small fire to put out, quickly began to spread.
"On the uphill side, we had fire in a wall. No sooner than we hit that we had fire popping up in a couple other places on this side and then the other side went off," Sabol said. "We thought we would have a quick put out, we knocked the first one out and it started popping up everyone on us."
Sabol described the fire damage as significant- on both sides of the home.
"This was an older building, it's been renovated a lot. There's paneling and drywall and suspended ceilings and stuff. Apparently the fire was traveling in there on us," he said.
