'This Is All Donated': McCandless Cares And Shares Food Drive Providing Food To Those In Need

MCCANDLESS (KDKA) -- Dozens of families are getting the food they need thanks to a two-part effort food distribution in McCandless.

Retired Army veteran John Wallace, of McCandless, was first in line for the Cares and Shares Distribution at McCandless Town Hall Wednesday morning. Wallace has been out of work for a few weeks due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

"I work at Panera Bread in McCandless," he told KDKA's Lisa Washington. "Of course, I do dining room, but the dining room is shut down."

Wallace says he's looking forward to going back to work in a few days. In the meantime, he's getting a little help with food from his neighbors.

"It's fantastic," he said about the food drive. "This is so close to where I live, I said I might as well just come down, I'm not working."

"We had four days of collections and this is all donated," Bob Grimm, the McCandless town manager said, while showing the bags of food. "The residents of McCandless have been overwhelming in their support of the program."

This is the first time McCandless Township has held a food drive like this. Volunteers collected and organized the donations into 400 bags. Each car recieved two bags of food.

"It's a variety of canned goods boxed goods and cereals," Grimm said. "There's another table for mixed items, maybe more perishable or odd items that they can select if they need it."

A video posted to the McCandless Township Facebook page by the president of the council showed the food that was donated by community members.
