Local English Class Makes Donation To KD Turkey Fund

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - The final push for funds for this year's KD Turkey Fund is in full swing.

On Tuesday, KDKA-TV's Rick Dayton went to an honor's English class at Hampton High School, where the kids were in a giving mood.

Inspiration comes from strange places. In this case, from Jean Valjean, the main character in Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables."

"What will you do with your money? What will you do to make the world a better place? And we create philanthropic brochures and this is the first year we took the additional step and actually tried to do something to give back," English Teacher Kelly Emmett said.

The sophomores had to pick a charity to fund and they picked the KD Turkey Fund.

"When you are asked to go out and find a cause that you can go and help out, it kind of really does get you thinking about all the people out there, Once you get into it -- all the people out there that really need the help," Steve Dayton said.

Rick Dayton was asked to speak about the fund's 30-year history, who receives the help and where the money goes.

"It's easy to lose track of everyone because we live in fortunate situations, and there are people down the road who need that help," Gabrielle Scherer said.

In one day, they scraped together $105, which is enough to feed seven families. That number will double to 14 when the donation is matched by PNC Bank.

"You become so self-absorbed sometimes in your own life and I think, seeing other people sometimes, it opens your eyes and makes you realize other people aren't as fortunate as you. I think it's very important to see that other side," Emma Werling said.

For the kids, a break from essays and term papers is a chance to think differently for a day, and we are truly thankful they thought of the KD Turkey Fund.
