Inspectors Try to Find What Went Wrong at Well

State officials are inspecting the equipment at the Clearfield County gas well that spewed explosive gas and polluted water for 16 hours last week.

Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Neil Weaver said Sunday that the agency's oil and gas section staff were at the scene.

Weaver says the well's blowout preventer failed, and the investigators want to know why. Weaver declined to discuss what, if anything, investigators have found so far, or whether well driller EOG Resources of Houston committed any violations.

EOG isn't saying how the accident happened, citing the ongoing investigation.

Crews evacuated the site Thursday night and didn't regain control over it until just past noon Friday. Officials say nobody was hurt, the gas didn't explode and polluted water didn't reach a nearby waterway.
